Belling cooker

One of the hotplate control knobs on my 2007 Belling 317an electric cooker broke off in my wife's hands last night. The hotplate will not switch off or get any cooler. I can find replacement knobs, but there may be a switch problem as well. There is a small amount of broken plastic left inside, stuck to the metal stub of the control knob. I had no idea in what position the control had been left, thus no idea what temperature it remained at. I tried making small fractions of a turn in one direction, using pliers on the metal stub and turning off the oven, waiting for it to cool, making another small turn. I have done this for a whole day now and there is no change in temperature: the hotplate is the largest, hottest one.
This makes me think that the switch operated by the control knob, is also faulty. I have a good spares place in mind for tomorrow: EAG in Grimsby, and will go up there to buy whatever I need. However, I need to know what sort of job is entailed in removing enough of the cooker to get at the switches and control knob stubs. I can pull off the other knobs quite easily, but have no idea where to go from there. Anyone any ideas?
Also, how to wean my wife off steroids? She breaks things...;):D

Every electric cooker I have seen either has a dedicated fuse/breaker in the consumer panel and also an electric breaker on the wall near the cooker.
the knob shaft has a flat surface on it? Remove one or the working knobs an use that. If you can get it to fit at least move the flat area to the same location as the other with it knob removed
In some situations a picture is worth a thousand words, and for some of us like me to imagine a broken piece of plastic on a shaft and the giving advice on that is pushing my telepathic abilities0 -
My guess is if you pull the cooker out from the wall, behind the back of the top you will find some screws which undo and let the top be lifted off, possibly hinging at the front)
Or on the bottom front edge of the control panel fascia, which allow the fascia to come up or off.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0
