Yes important data and no back up. Yes I know I'm stupid! Won't be happening again with the new machine. I won't die if I don't get the files back but it would be a major inconvenience and take a long time to sort everything out.

I talk about data backup here, (Your hard disk seems OK, a bit like stuck keyboard or something ?) This will happen to a newer computer, backup is always important.. Can you tell me which model you have got ?

Buy a hard disk caddy. Take the disk out of the computer and put it in the caddy. COnnect the caddy to your working laptop. Copy all the files you want to keep onto the laptop. Put the disk back into the computer. With you laptop create a Windows 10 installation USB or DVD. Use that to reinstall Windows from scratch on the computer.

Back to the basic, wongataa rightly already mention about the data backup, He suggests clean installation, I suggest repair work, but both suggest backing up data first !!!

Get something like this, (you can get a cheaper one, that is OK)
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ORICO-2-5-Inch-USB-3-0-SATA-External-Hard-Drive-HDD-SSD-Enclosure-Caddy-Case-UK/202108110901

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-To-SATA-External-HDD-SSD-Hard-Disk-Drive-Adapter-2-5-Converter-Lead-Cable/271659298952

    This is what wongataa said:

Then connect this USB enclosure with other computer via USB port, then your computer should be able to see c:\user\yourusername. Backup this folder to another computer's folder "backupdata111217" or something.

Then you are safe, you can do anything. You can perform clean installation or perform repair work etc. (As your data is already safe, no worry :)
Anyway, you needed to make a backup before this happens. If your data is important, this is a great chance to perform backup. (I think your hard disk seems OK, I assume that your Windows bootloader corrupted. )

No worry! No rush! Relax! Happy computing!

Another option: This is what I did for repair works. This would be the absolute solution for your computer lol (if your computer works fine)

What I actually did for my repair work for my clients

    1) Get an SSD
    AlwaysHere wrote: »
    This is a bargen price!

    2) Diskclone from the existing hard disk to the SSD
    3) Repair operation (even you failed this try, all of your existing Windows Hard disk remains intact!) So you can perform a clean installation as well.

I did repair work with an SSD upgrade together :T

At the moment, you have got a beep problem, you have to fix this issue as well. (But if you confirm your computer is OK. this would be an elegant operation  )

No rush, make a backup first, then fix your beeping issue.
  • Hi toshi

Thanks again for the replies and the detail. The PC is a Packard Bell iMedia D3526. The label just says hard drive 1TB hard drive.

Will the second link you provided be ok? I'll have to find my screwdriver!
  • Will my hard drive definitely be 2.5" not 3.5"?

NO ! I am wrong, I have assumed that you have a notebook lol I should have asked your model first. Please ignore... Do not buy anything. Let's start again. (I will leave my post for notebook users :p)

As I have got a new information, I will change my suggestion completely. Firstly, please disconnect keyboard, and mouse etc and connect them again. can you fix the beep problem?

Magically assuming your beep problem is fixed.

    Then what I would do

Usually a desktop have 4 SATA PORTS, one is used for 1TB hard disk, another one is used for DVD drive. (so 2 port free)

    k6EWgbfW-p6ngm-sata-s-.png

Then I will an 240GB SSD as mentioned, I will install Windows 10 to the SSD. (You will have to install all application)

    http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/compatible-upgrade-for/PackardBell/istart-d3256

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/50cm-SATA-3-Locking-Plug-to-Right-Angle-Plug-6Gb-High-Speed-Cable-Lead-006548/262478357937

Crucial said you can use their SSD (but they don't say how many ports your motherboard have. (It is very likely you have 4 SATA ports, but I just want you to make sure about this.

    1) boot drive : 240GB SSD (NEW WINDOWS 10 1709 version fresh installation)
    2) secondary drive 1TB HARD DISK (current hard disk)

then I will copy the existing data from 1TB hard disk to 240GB SSD, if your data would fit within 240GB. if not I will keep as it is.

The beauty of this solutions is that you can keep existing hard disk intact and install an SSD with the latest Windows 10.

One up and running, you can organise 1TB hard disk later,

    **************
Chipset: SiS 671 Windows 10 compatibility issue (I would confirm this first before action ?)

Crucial said your iStart D3256 uses SiS 671 chipset, I am not sure if SiS 671 is compatible with Windows 10. That would be my concern now.

Hope someone will assist this issue as well.

It should be 3.5 inch hard disk for a desktop, (I made a mistake see previous post. )

Backup to another desktop computer's hard disk (if you have)
If you have another desktop, you can pull out the 1TB hard disk from Packard Bell iStart D3256 and another desktop computer's SATA PORT. (if you don't have a spare SATA cable, you can temporally use a cable for DVD drive) So you don't need an USB enclosure.

It just makes a really horrible squealing noise.
Sounds like a jammed CPU, case or PSU fan. Get a local computer friend/shop to have a look; if data is important tell them that IMMEDIATELY and they will remove the hard disk and attempt data recovery in the first instance.
  • Thanks again for all the responses.

    UPDATE!!!

The beeping problem stopped. When I I tried to start the PC it would straight away go to a blue error page saying something like 'failed stage 1 implementation' or something like that.

I used my laptop to create a Windows 10 recovery on the flash drive. I tried to use this but kept on getting the same error. It just wouldn't work.

The hard drive has 2 partitions. I was trying to reinstall Windows on the same partition it was installed on. I decided to try the other one. IT WORKED!! So now the PC works. I think I have Windows installed on both partitions which I guess isn't great, but, at least I've been able to get my files!!!

Thanks everyone for the thoughts and ideas. Any comments on my current situation and if I should do anything on the PC would be great.

    Thanks

    Congratulation!

Firstly you SHOULD make a backup of your data !!

Secondly I strongly suggest to install an SSD as a boot drive, the exisiting 1TB can be a secondary drive. (you can tidy up this 1TB hard disk after installing an SSD)
