ASDA docking pay!

Hi everyone,

Friend of mine has been working at ASDA for 4 months now and has just been told his pay is going to be docked because he has been clocking out a minute LATE. If you do one minute over your 8-hour shift they automatically take away 15 minutes off your pay. This is stipulated in the new batch of contracts, when he brought it up with management that he was unaware- they said it was his responsibility to read his contract and he should have known. Bit harsh, they've given everyone pay rises but are taking money away if people do one minute extra? When he was hired he was working under an old contract but the new ones have just come out so new staff have been automatically put on them. Is there anyone who works for ASDA that knows about workers rights?

  • you dont have to work for ADSA to know a workers rights, if its in the contract and your friend agreed to it (doesnt matter if he read it or not) then thats how it is.

Why are you here and not your friend. if he/she isnt prepared to ask for themselves than maybe 15mins pay isnt that much of an issue for them.

Are you sure you don't mean clocking in 1 minute late or clocking out 1 minute early ? I can't see them penalising workers for clocking out that small amount late, it would be self defeating as workers would queue up early to ensure they clocked out on time..

I honestly mean clocking out one minute after his shift finished which is why I'm so flabbergasted...he's been told that 8 hr shift- entitled to half an hour break (unpaid)
Over 8 hours is 45 minute break (unpaid)
If you clock out a minute later it means you've worked over 8hrs so they deduct pay for a supposed 45minute break.

I don't see how it would be possible for everybody to clock out precisely on time to the minute, if you have 10 people due to finish at the same time they'd have 6 seconds each to do it, and in my (limited and old) experience of time clocks that seems very unlikely. I agree with molerat the the OP has misunderstood what the problem is.

Cross posted with the latest reply, so I can understand how it happens, but I'm not sure how ASDA think the clocking out should be done in that case.

Totally agree it sounds ridiculous which is why I thought to post and see if anyone else had similar issues..at the end of the day, the employer aren't being clear on how long his breaks need to be, surely? He's going to ring HR..

Odd! Though as long as there is not a queue to clock out and I have not seen anything that old in years then I don't see anything wrong with it.

Their clocking out system registers he's done over his work hours therefore he must be taking a longer break so they are going to pay him less money for taking a supposed longer break because he's clocked out a minute after his shift finishes. What insanity!

Again, need specifics about the clocking out system to understand if this is fair.

I imagine these days you would carry a wifi device and press a button so no excuse for problems.

However it does seem like excessive burocracy! If you stayed much longer and were due more then they would not pay you it. No reason clocking off is therefore not automatic.
