How can I ensure we have right tarrif

in Energy
My husband at 72 has recently been diagnosed with dementia and he has always dealt with our finances etc. When he first began exhibiting problems he took advice and changed to Avro dual energy, having never ever switched before it was big saving. Since his diagnosis I have had to take over everything and discovered we are in arrears with this company partially because the usage was underestimated but also the fixed price came to an end in August without my husband realising. I have searched emails and despite them claiming we were notified via email when fixed tariff was ending in August I can find nothing to this effect and we were automatically switched to standard tariff. I explained my husbands issues and that we would have clearly chosen their cheapest tariff in August had we known but they say cannot tell us what options were and it cannot be changed.
This is all new territory for me can anyone advise please?

I should crack on and switch now.
As you seem to be asking if your husband's dementia should get you cheaper energy since August, I think we all know there is not much mileage in that.0 -
Go onto an energy comparison site, such as the MSE Cheap Energy Club, and put in your annual usage figures from your bills with Avro, then switch. Avro do have cheap tariff with No Exit Fees, so you could phone them and change to that (I would assume the change would be straight away if staying with them, but check) if you need more time to decide who to switch to - the no Exit Fees is important if you only want to stay until you find out who will be cheaper.0

I am happy to stay with them for the interim and until arears is paid but am disappointed that no email was sent to prompt tariff was ending in August, we have automatically been on a high tariff since August which clearly we would not have opted for. Until I spoke to them this week they had not logged recent readings I had logged online or a reading taken by their man who read our meter 2 weeks ago so initially the bill and new direct debit payment was incorrect and scary at 4 times what we had been paying. I am not disputing what we have used just want to ensure we are and have been paying a fair tariff since August and if any circumstances may be relevant. Because of confusion I am struggling to establish what our true annual usage is to compare with other suppliers.0

Have you got details of your bills from 12 months ago? Are the readings shown as ACTUAL - if so read your meters today and you can work out the annual consumption.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0

If you want to stay with the same energy company have a look on your bill: That should tell you if you are on the cheapest of their tariffs which might be a fixed tariff.
Scottish Power who I'm with does that and goes a step further in guaranteeing no exit fees if I switch to another of their tariffs.0 -
AVRO probably wont let you switch until your account is back in credit. AVRO prices have risen by quite a lot since a year ago, as have other companies but have not risen by much since August. I am with AVRO and started a new fixed tariff Simple and Supreme in August. if you enter your post code into this AVRO site https://www.avroenergy.co.uk/Prices you can see the tariff information for the current fixed tariff and the variable tariff that you are probably on - Simple Energy. On the plus side if prices continue to go up you will be on a cheaper rate in aug-dec 2018 than you would have been if you had switched in August 2017. Good luck.0
