Are there any alternatives to the Tesla Powerwall.

We have a solar system on the house but we are both career people out at 7 back at 8. I delay the washing machine etc to come on during peak daylight etc but the idea of a battery appeals to me as we spend more time at the house at night.

The Tesla powerwall looks and is superb but it’s a massive outlay. I wondered if there were any cheaper alternatives out there by different manufacturers.

Cheers.

There are loads of posts on batteries for storing solar and off-peak electricity in the Green and Ethical section of the Forum.

Hiya. There are literally dozens of offerings, but hard to compare as size, warranty, life cycles, cost etc vary across the offerings. Plus some are DC side, to be connected to your main inverter, some are AC side, so store from excess (export), and some of the AC side don't come with an inverter, so you have to add the cost of the battery modules to the inverter ..... and so on.

Quite a few PV'ers (like me) have been chatting about domestic storage for some time, so I started a thread so that we could put lots of info in one place.

There's also a diary type report on a friends battery (installed under a deal with the local DNO), and my adventures in researching a battery deal with OVO, which just doesn't seem to stack up quite right.

In brief, and only my opinion, but prices are just too high at the moment, but they are falling fast, so maybe 2020(ish).

For simple economics you can take the cost of the system and divide it by the number of warranted cycles x useable battery size. In the case of the Tesla Powerwall II that works out at around 10p/kWh at the moment, so hard to see an economic argument unless you can also make money selling leccy to the grid at peak times (something that happens in Australia now, and should roll out in the UK).

    On-grid domestic battery storage
Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

For general PV advice please see the PV FAQ thread on the Green & Ethical Board.
