What doors do you have leading to conservatory?

Hi all,

My living room leads to conservatory. Currently have 3 timber doors in a 1.8m frame. One door opens on its own like an access door, the other 2 then fold back the opposite way so the whole area opens to make one room which I like.

These doors are now old drafty and warped and I want something more modern. Can I ask... What do other people have? I'd like Aluminium for the look, warmth and security but the large glass panels may not be best looking into the conservatory. Timber but better quality is an option but worried about drafts and warping? Finally UPVC with some blinds across the frame but unsure of the frame, would quite like flat threshold from lounge to conservatory. Quite fussy I'm afraid!

So really just wondered what others have!?

Thanks

Your legal responsibilities are with the Buildings Regulations. Nobody has seen your conservatory, but the ethos is external quality doors located here which means insulation, strength and decent locking. It sounds like you do not have these - external doors are not normally at your nominal 600mm sizes. Hence I am assuming ( until you correct me!) that you have poor quality internal doors which are in breach of the Regulations.

Replacement timber doors may be difficult - you will have to search out sizes. But really you should have two at a nominal 900mm because this then gives a nod to disability legislation which you are currently not showing signs of compliance.

If your conservatory cooks to a high temperature timber doors could be a foolish decision unless you treat them with care and consideration.

upvc is an option - have a look at low threshold cills here. These cills also give a nod towards disability access and all the more so if you just have a pair of doors.
  • As Furts says, there are solutions that not only comply with regulations. They will also provide greater thermal and sonic insulation as well as better fire protection. My conservatory fills a corner. I have an external grade glazed door to the kitchen, complete with multi-point locks. Those locks help secure the door tightly into the frame so for the periods where the conservatory is not in use, the door doesn't warp or move on the hinges in the very hot or cold weather. Between the conservatory and the living room are what were the sliding patio doors on the back of the house. They are double-glazed and aluminium framed. Thresholds on both doors are slim profile. We are fortunate that we have plenty of indoor space so the conservatory isn't needed all year round so being able to isolate it is important.

My house has a sliding door leading to my porch, which is great. Its has a lock which is outdoor standard, its doubled glazed glass with a metal surround, with one 'door' which is fixed and does not slide. Its very solid.

Why dont you look at a few door web sites for a selection of whats available, the construction, colours, and an indication of price.
I used a local installer for doors but used these sites for ideas.

    THanks all for the replies.

I have external doors to the outside but timber to the interior. A reason for looking new doors. Im unsure of the look of the UPVC in a living room but ill need to do some more hunting. Although low cill would be great i wondered if there is an option to have a complete Level floor between too, but i guess this isnt an option due to a frame being required.

Thanks for the links. I will take a look for external grade french doors i think and find some form of blinds to give us the option to hide the large glass panes.
