Any recommended credit cards with ability to download .qif or .ofx?

I discovered yesterday that Capital One's new website does not include the previous functionality to download .qif files to import transactions into accounting software any more (YNAB in my case). I contacted them and they confirmed the functionality is no longer there, and they have no plans to add it in, but they will pass my feedback to their communications department as communications are very important to them.

I'm now looking to change credit card provider as a result, but I'm finding it very hard to find out other providers websites have the ability to download .qif or .ofx files upfront as this doesn't tend to be advertised. I pay off my credit card in full every month, so was looking at reward cards. I already have an Amex card, but need a secondary card for the places that do not take Amex, so thought maybe Amazon would be a good option. I called their Customer Support and was told they don't have the functionality I'm looking for either.

Can anyone recommend another option (reward card or otherwise)?

Thanks in advance!

  • MBNA allow downloads of both of those formats. They recently stopped giving rewards though.
  • Barclaycard, Santander and Halifax certainly do this. Not sure about any others though.
Retired at age 56 after having "light bulb moment" due to reading MSE and its forums. Have been converted to the "budget to zero" concept and use YNAB for all monthly budgeting and long term goals.

Halifax and TSB have .qif downloads but they show debits as credits and vice versa. I have to edit the .qif files before importing into MSMoney.

I'd expect Lloyds and Bank of Scotland to have the same problem, but I don't have their credit cards.

    Nationwide have .ofx downloads.
  • Thanks for all the helpful suggestions Rufus Dufus, tempus_fugit and Vortigern. I definitely don't want the hassle of having to manually edit transactions because the debits and credits are the wrong way round so I will steer clear of Halifax / TSB etc!

I'm just amazed that a company that has been providing a download facility for years has decided it is no longer needed. Do so few people proactively manage their finances that our needs are seen as insignificant?! It would be nice if all providers had this functionality as standard...

I've been recording my financial transactions since 1992, first using Quicken then MS Money, and for all that time they have been entered and reconciled manually. It takes a few seconds every day and a few minutes every month, so I've never felt the need to download transactions from any of my financial institutions.
  • Hi agrinnall. I used to do the same until the banks and credit card providers I used started offering the download functionality, as I used to hate doing it manually. It probably feels more tedious when you do updates less regularly. At the time, I was only doing it once a month (now I do it every week, but still don't fancy going manual again!)

Is it not the purpose to add transactions manually because you have receipts and then if anything does show up on the bank records/statements then it raises a concern as it may be fraudulent.

If you just download but have no records of your own then what benefit do you have?
  • Hi BikingBud. I always go through all of my transactions once I've imported them into YNAB to categorise them and check they align with what I know I've spent. If there's something I don't recognise, trust me, I'm on it like a shot! It's just a quicker process than having to type all of the details in from scratch.
