Thanks all! Can't wait to see the wee bundle tomorrow!
As I said, I made an appointment at the Holywood clinic, and the receptionist said it is £25 for the vaccinations, but she will probably need deworming too. So I am banking on around £40 in all....
I also took up the Tesco insurance, half price online at the moment. Hope she never needs it though!
I have organised her wee bed, food, bowls and litter tray, as well as scratching post and some toys....Even bought her a cuddly toy for night time...lol

Just an update to my mention of the M&S insurance - I got my renewal prices today and it was just over £90 for each of my cats (a hike of about £25 each on the first two years).

I'm not sure that the increases are related to the fact that I have claimed because the claims so far have only been on Charlie's policy, so surely Basil's shouldn't be affected. Unless they base it on the claimant rather than the policy. Anyway, it sounds like the Tesco offer is good.

    Hi Folks,
I know a lot of vets have been mentioned, but I wanted to add in the Earlswood Vet Hospital on the Belmont Road.

They brought my poor cat back from the dead (well severe renal failure) and he lived on merrily for another 2 and half years! They seem to do mostly dogs, but I can't fault them for their care of my cat. The nurses even went out every morning to get fresh sardines for him when he wouldn't eat the food they had.
Stay away from the Ashley Vets on the Lisburn road. We took my cat there to have her spayed and they left her in her cat carrier all day to !!!! all over herself. Poor thing.
    Cheers,

I'm from Holywood and we've used Garden Lodge for our cat since he was a kitten...17 years ago! They're very good. :)

Another vote for Earlswood here. One of my dogs has severe joint problems and has had week long stays there on two occasions when he has required surgery. The staff are wonderful and I have no doubt that my dog would not be as fit and well as he is today were it not for them. Des Thompson is a god among vets.
  • Is Archibald still practicing in Lisburn? ...now there was a vet!

Carson was unique, dirty, stinking, rough and ready but a heart of gold. I remember going to him on a Christmas day when my dog cut it's foot badly on glass hidden by snow. He couldn't have been nicer and was extremely cheap.

Unfortunately, if I remember rightly, he had to retire due to not following the rules with regards to putting down a cow on a farm which was ill, very sad. He used to be on the radio regularly too.

I have used Mr Archibald over the past few years, abrupt wee man but agree hes got a heart of gold. i visited one day to view his Menagerie ended up taking a kitten the following year i took two - think he had twenty altogether!

He gave me advice over the phone how to treat an eye infection for one of the cats the other needed cortisone injections which cost a couple of quid with him. As far as i know now he doesn't give injections anymore, so not sure if he's still working, but hes worth his weight in gold!:T

Mr Archbold, as I found out his name was when I tried to find him in the phone book one time, was a trusting vet. As far as I know he was called to a farm to see to a sick cow. His diagnosis was that it had to be put down and allegedly the Farmer asked would Carson allow the Farmer to do it himself later. He agreed, however the Farmer didn't put the cow down, the authorities found out and Carson lost his licence.

A great pity, as he was the most caring of vets. His surgery was scary though, many a time I was there and he had some poor animal under the knife as customers like me traipsed in and out. I also remember seeing mice running around the waiting room and he always had a few injured birds in cages in the surgery too.

  • We use Cedar Lodge vets on the ring road between the Castlereagh and Cregagh Roads and they're excellent.
