At the time given that some were "done" who had never ever used the card, the scale of and targeted nature of the compromise, the general consensus on the web was that it most probably a data leak at the card processing/manufacturing plant.

I had never ever used the card!

  • Maybe we have just been lucky then in not having an issue until now. What Santander fraud did tell us that as well as the almost £500 spent by the fraudster on Eurostar internet of all things they also tried to transfer almost £10k out of our account which luckily Santander stopped so that never appeared on the account.

All I know is that I will continue to check the account daily just in case anything like this happens in the future.

I've had 1 instance in 30 years, which is when I got my first bank account. Had several card accounts and saving accounts, in that time.

10 years + ago, my bank account with Natwest and despite initial good impressions of how they dealt with it, flagged up transactions correctly and asked me to call them, by the end I wasn't completely satisfied. Nearly ended up with the transactions being allowed as they failed to send a form to me, had to chase it up and I was 1 day away from being out of pocket.

Several years ago my husband had one on his business card. The bank cancelled the card and sent out a new one.

The day after it arrived, before he had time to do anything with it, a fraudulent payment occurred on it. So the card was cancelled and a new one issued. No further problems.

A couple of years ago he used his personal debit card in a local shop He very rarely used it so knew that was the only place it had been used recently. The bank picked up a fraudulent charge before it got on the card and contacted him to check it. The charge was for a top up of a Vodaphone phone in the Midlands. We live in Scotland, many miles away.

The shop it was used in is a local specialist retailer who we trust implicitly so don't know where the number was got from.
