Toilet Cistern has a mind of its own

We keep on being woken up in the wee small houtrs by our toilet cistern - not only filling itself up - but also emptying itself !
I can understand the filling bit - due to the increased pressure at 3 am - but "EMPTYING ITSELF !!
The problem started about a month ago and it is now starting to concern me - (expense if I don't wake up)
Will a replacement (dual flush) valve help or do we need a pressure reducing device in the feed ?

The flap is probably not getting a proper seal at the base of the cistern.0

Take the lid off and have look what's in there.
There a few different options for in and out.0 -
When you have the lid off, make a note of any codes etched on the underside (if there are any) as this will indicate what model of bog you have.0

Sounds like a case of sleep walking to me!

Some cisterns have overflow that vent into the pan. Check that the fill valve is sealing properly and that the water level is not too high.0 -
Turn off the water supply and see if the level drops - if it does, likely the flush valve is leaking. Or add some food dye to the cistern, and see if it leaks into the pan.0
