Different Day - Different Prices

Has anyone else noticed how much car insurance quotes can differ if you redo them on a different day?
On a quiet work afternoon a couple of weeks ago I started researching how much my insurance would be this year, tried confused.com (cheapest about £770), and then the others seperately and came up with Churchill at £640. Was pretty pleased with this, and when my renewal came through from Diamond at £774 I phoned to see what they could do. Got it down to £700 but Churchill still winning.
Went back to Churchill tonight and re submitted all my details to make sure I got my greasy palm cash back, and the price (exactly the same details) was down to £634. Decided to go back and try the other nearly as cheap places (tesco and halifax) and their quotes had gone up (wouldn't have been a problem because still have details of original quotes saved). Went back to confused.com and resubitted details, and the cheapest was now £666, went to the site and made a couple of ajustments, and now have a quote of £602 from NIG through Screen traders.
All in all I've saved an extra £40 by not going straight back to my saved quotes, am very happy. Although slightly confused as to how the insurers can justify their bouncy prices.
