    Hi,Ted

You seem to be something of an expert on Vit D,thank you for posting all of those links.

Most of them are a bit too technical for my brain to take in however  so what would be the minimum amount of Vit D you would suggest as a daily dose?

I am currently taking 400iu which is not enough if I understand your links correctly.I don't get much sunlight, even in the summer because I tend to stay out of the sun as much as possible to avoid damage to my skin,I have enough wrinkles already

I have always been a bit wary of taking more than the recommended dosage, but breast cancer is a big concern of mine so I am willing to take anything that might give me extra protection against it.

I can't provide the clear unambiguous answer you really need because such posts are deemed medical advice. The fact that "up to date NHS official medical advice" is demonstrably absurd is irrelevant. While it is permissable to show how banks are destroying lives with bad advice it isn't permitted here to prove how doctors do the same.

This link may persuade you to modify your sun exposure practice next year but until April (when your shadow becomes shorter than your height and UVB reaches the ground again) you will need to use effective strength supplements.

Perhaps if you read this link you would find it answers your problem.

EDIT; Vitamin D in pregnancy: an old problem still to be solved? A UK doctor talking sense about Vitamin D "if such a threshold were applied to UK population data, some 80–90% would be considered at risk of deficiency.":T at last someone has realised.

I phoned up and asked customer services. I've just emailed them again pointing out it really should be stated on the label.

It may be helpful if several people all ring/email/write making the same point.

Perhaps if you include the paper The case against ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) as a vitamin supplement it will let them know their customers are aware of the difference and won't be fobbed off with inferior, less effective, vitamin d as are the medical profession.
This paper also makes the point several times that 1000iu Cholecalciferol is equivalent to 3000iu ergocalciferol

    Dear Ted,

    Thank you for your email.

I can confirm that our Vitamin D is Cholecalciferol (vitamin D3)

    Kind Regards

Reports of Rickets in Blackburn yesterday - not that it will make any difference. GPs will still be dishing out the D2 I bet. You would think H&B would actually CARE about thier product enough to detail its ingrediants....However, rather than all the pills -

A 10 min burst with this per day might be cheaper than popping all those pills. Have you looked into lighting at all?

as described in detail in this guide

    http://www.uvguide.co.uk/zoolamps.htm

Of course you can get this in the US with a timer - http://sperti.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=1&products_id=28&osCsid=e2c75665c4d78fc56dbd6b15553371a7

Might just buy one of them.

The Raduim Sanolux is self ballasted so you can just pop it into a E27 socket and turn it on. It outputs high UVB so you would then, from following the article, "
[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]humans should use the lamp at a distance of 20 inches, with their eyes closed, for varying lengths of time depending upon their skin type, but typically (for a person with "normally reacting" skin type III) for a two week course, building up from only three minutes per day to 14 minutes per day"

Since the measured UVB is 200uW per cm2 (after burning the lamp in) at a 40" distance, this would deliver around 100IU per minute in human skin at 10% exposure. Assuming a daily dose of around 500IU-1000IU is required thats 5-10mins.

Assuming you expose more than 10% skin, you could get down to 2 mins. Total cost is around £70 I think.

To get he same 1000IU from UK sunlight would take an average of 20-40mins when peak sunny during 1pm-3pm.

I've been thinking on exactly the same lines as you have. Just haven't got round to taking any action yet though.

I phoned up and asked about these and they told me that the voltage would be different and they would not work from a 240-120 transformer but I do not understand why it wouldn't work or that was their way of saying they would not guarantee the item if it wasn't used on 120 volt?

I think there are definite advantages to getting your vitamin d made right where it's needed, providing people don't get carried away and stay under the lamp/sun too long. People need to understand that once the vitamin D has been created further UVB exposure processes it on to suprasterols that the body doesn't use. The good thing about this is that you cannot ever get a vitamin d overdose from sunlight but the bad news is that if you stay in the sun too long not only do you get burnt but you've also destroyed the skins means of dealing with the adverse outcomes of burning hence you set yourself up for skin cancer. The advantage a home lamp would have over a commercial sunbed is that it would be easier just to get a few minutes daily rather than restrict you sunbed use to a longer weekly/fortnightly session.

Vitamin D that we obtain through the diet seems to be less effective than the vitamin that is generated in the sun

  • Today in my local BOOTS I checked the Vit d3 was in stock then asked if they were doing both the 3 for 2 and 50% off as online. They explained that Boots.com were run as a separate organisation and therefore the offers were not the same HOWEVER if I took in a print out of the online offer they would price match so tomorrow I'll have a go and see if it works.

It's back in stock online and not rationed any more so six x 90 @500iu=£5.96

so it's about 2p per 1000iu and now better value than the H&B offer.
