Electric Flame Effect?

When buying electric fire, try to hear the noise it makes, if possible. We are all electric and have had various focal point electric fires over the years. We have had to move one from the sitting room to the dining room as the noise of the electric motor nearly drowned out the TV.
It's not easy to judge noise in showroom, but at home it seems much louder.
when we went to look I had it in mind to go for the gas as I can't stand our present elec fire & the noise it makes, but the one the chap showed us you could barely hear, but it is niggling that my elec bill now is far heftier than my gas which puts me off the elec fire0 -
ours isnt very noisy and i havent seen a great difference on bills our bills are always sky high no matter what!! depends how youre going to use it i suppose we have central heating in room as well so dont really use it for heat just have the light on to make it cosy and use the heat switch to take chill off now and again, our main room is in the front and i have gas in there but i must admit i dont often have that on either because again the central heating seems enough.electric/gas? both as good as each other in my house!0

ditto to that as we've had a new CH system installed - then I've got the conundrum of should I just put on the flame effect for 'cosy'? - not very money-saving or ecological, as using energy for aesethtic purposes goes against the grain! - with the gas I wouldn't have that choice
I've got to make a decision soon as the plasterer is coming to look at the house soon & making good the chimney breast where we took out the grate is on the list & I want to make the opening to fit whatever fire I choose - help!!0 -
Good point thanks on the 'cosy' feeling.
It has made up my mind, we have reasonable CH., and I had not considered that with Gas, you cannot simply have the flame effect w/o the heat.
Thanks to all participants!O would some power the giftie gie us to see ourselves as others see us.

right - managed to pin hubby down to discuss fire options - as our CH is new & efficient we reasoned that the fire would rarely be put on for heat purposes so what we put there will be mainly for focal point/decorative purposes - in that case if we went for gas we'd hardly use it as the only option is to turn it on for heat, whereas the elec you could have on for the flame effect
he's not happy with buying a gas fire just to fill the hole, if that was the case he offered to brick the fireplace up but me not happy with plain chimney breast wall - so elec it's gonna have to be0
