Council tax/low income

Is somebody able to tell me, or is there a website where i can find out what classifies as a low income for council tax purposes and if any benefits are available for this. As my student course is classed as part-time (even though i am blatantly studying more hours than most of my \'full-time\' compatriots) i have a feeling i might end up with some nasty council tax bill in the near future. Thanking you all.

Thankyou for that. But it is difficult for me to use that as i have not yet got a council tax bill. However currently i only earn £65 a week and have to pay rent, living costs and course fees out of that. Needless to say, even without the expected ridiculously added council tax i already struggle to live on that money. As far as i am concerned i am being punished for trying to better myself. If i wanted to doss about for the rest of my life i would probably be on hundreds a week in benefits for doing little more than playing consoles and watching daytime TV.0

Holy crap!
You're living off £65 a week AND have to pay council tax?:eek::eek:
That's quite a shocker. Someone on that panorama BBC programme i saw a week or so ago was being paid £33,000 a year in benefits.Instigated terrorism the road to dictatorship.0 -

There are a few people who use this site on that amount of benefits ...
Have a look at the website of your local council, this will give you the amounts for the relevant council tax bands (if you are looking for a 1 bed flat you could assume it will be in Band A or B at most). If you are living alone, you will get a 25% discount from the full amount.
If you have not yet received a bill, you need to contact the council. Do not wait for them to contact you!Gone ... or have I?0 -
I once came across a family getting £55K p/a in benefits, wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it myselfI no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
