Thanks for the offer. I took a gamble and made an offer of partial refund, even though it wasn't justified, which they accepted and resolved it. I think that's what they were after all along.
I would like to think a lesson learned but I really cannot see how it is possible to avoid being blackmailed when you know that ebay will decide in the buyers favour almost every time!

This is the nature of selling on ebay now - you just have to expect some amount of problems, buyers claiming items don't work when they do to get a free return, buyers who say items have not arrived when they have etc.

Fortunately for me these issues are fairly limited but it probably varies depending on what you sell.
