I pay more tax than my co-worker

Hi all, hoping a tax code expert could help me here.

Myself and my colleague do exactly the same job and are paid the same amount in salary. However my tax code is 1156LN and his is 1150LN. Last month I paid nearly £70 more tax than him. We are both single men, and not claiming any benefits. Can anyone explain it?

He has an additional tax allowance, at that difference in code I would take a wild stab in the dark its for washing a uniform?

although that £60 difference in could wouldn't add up to £70 in a month, Pension? Taxsmart? any other deductions before tax from your colleagues pay?

OP's tax code is higher so 'should' be paying less tax. Not sure what the N is after your tax code - non cumulative?

Does either of you pay into a works pension?

err have you written that statement in the wrong order?

1156 is more than 1150 so "he" gets 11,560 tax free and "you" get 11,500 tax free so why "you" are paying more tax than him is an impossibility.

£60 is, as suggested already, the standard allowance for uniform laundry.

that said, the fact you write both you and he have N as your code suffix shows that both you and he have transferred some of your code to your respective spouses. Then again for you both to be on a code of 1150 or more would be an impossibility in such a context as you say you are both single. Have you actually seen his payroll to verify what you write?

Obviously cannot comment on your friends tax position unless they want to give details but if you want your tax checked you need to give the following details....

From your last payslip to check currant position
taxable gross, tax paid, tax code and basis, week or month number (or date paid if number not shown) taxable pay to date and tax paid to date. If applicable previous pay and tax figures.

Then from payslip before that to check if anything has changed exactly the same details as for last payslip.
  • We both got some backpay last week so we checked out each other’s payslips. From what I looked online the N is for married couples only, so I don’t undertand it. We are both in smart pensions and our pension amount that month was identical as well as our NI contribution. The only difference is I have a student loan and I am paying more tax. Don’t get it! thanks for replies so far though...

If you want your tax checked you have to give figures; any suggestions without figures are just guesses.
