Do the police normally get involved at all, if the accident took place on private land?
A car park is a public place if the general public use it. Who owns it is irrelevant. So no it's not unusual for the police to get involved on an accident in a privately owned (eg supermarket) car park.
  • You need the CCTV footage to see if you really did hit the other car.

Seems a waste of Police resources to bother investigating this but there you go.....

You would seem to have a defence that you were unaware of the collision and therefore could not be expected to stop/ exchange details but it doesn't do you any favours that you moved to a different space immediately after the supposed collision.

If it comes back that you have to go to court (and it may not, police of PF may decide it's not worth proceeding with) you will have time to decide what to do.

I would want to see the CCTV and find out what damage was caused to the other car before running with an unaware defence.
  • Thanks guys, really do appreciate all the advice. Going to contact insurance company re possible legal cover and will try seeing the cctv footage as well of this incident in June!

If you received the letter in July and only bought the car in March then there's a possiblility that it was the previous owner?
Did they tell you the date / is there a date stamp on the CCTV footage?

So why did you move your car to a different space on the night of the incident?

Because you've realised the space is a bit tight and decided to look for a better one? I've done that before now and managed to not hit anyone in the process.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
