Smile, Natwest and cheques

I have a current account with both smile and natwest. In my smile paying in book it says I can pay in a cheque at any UK clearing bank branch but charges may apply.

Will natwest charge me for paying in a cheque to a non natwest account?

Not sure what other banks do.

Anyone any experience of this?

Most banks charge you for using them to pay into another Bank. The exceptions may be where there is a relationship between the two banks e.g HSBC & First Direct, Nat West & RBS

So that means it should be free to pay it in using the co-operative bank?
Since there part of the co-operative group.

yep. no charges for paying into a coop bank branch, you can also post it to them to a freepost address, pay in over counter (in special envelope) at the post office.
You can also pay in cash at coop bank branch and cash at postoffice counter

You should also be able to pay in a natwest cheque to your smile account free at a natwest branch.
