HP laptop not charging

Been away for 4 weeks and now my laptop wont charge, plugged in it will power up and can use it all day, but the battery icon says 0% available, plugged in, not charging'

Ive disconnected it, unplugged the battery and checked the connections but no joy. Any ideas please? Its about 3 years old

    hopefully it is your battery.

    Switch the laptop off remove the battery and make sure contacts on the battery an computer are clean.

    Have a friend/colleague with a similar model laptop?

    Open device manager, under 'batteries' right click on, and uninstall the 'Microsoft ACPI compliant control method battery'
    Right click on 'battery' again and scan for hardware changes. This should reset the battery monitor if it's a software fault (it occasionally happens with my HP)
    Don't uninstall the microsoft AC adapter though

    Could also be a dead battery, but you normally get a warning about this
