Can anyone tellme how to format the hd on my pc?

Hi All,

Can anyone tell me how to format the hard drive on my pc, i have been told to go in to ms dos and type c>format, is that all i have to do? or is there a specific way to do this, any help would be great.

Thanks, I want to completly wipe to hard drive but be able to reinstall windows, (I am selling the pc and I am a little concerned if I do not do this the person who buys it will be able to access personal details such as credit card numbers,)

I have xp , and selling as have a laptop (the desktop has not been used since I bought it) possib lilly selling to friend but if not will list in freeads or something simular

Download DBAN, either CD/DVD or USB flash drive version. Run DBAN by booting computer from DBAN CD or USB flash drive. This will completely erase the hard drive. Then reinstall Windows using your XP CD.

when you say boot from flash drive, do you mean restart pc with flashdrive plugged in?

so even if i format the hd someone may still be able to get my personal details from it?

I have the disc that came with the system, so if i use bdan or whatever its called and then reinstall the xp disc, it should be safe to then sell the pc as a whole unit (its an e machine the spec is average at best ), thanks guys for your help
