Laptop memory -faulty ?

Having problem with laptop, originally was thinking hard disk is faulty.


Now think memory may be faulty, as showing errors when running memory test program (Memtest86 v4.20) which came with Ubuntu 12.10, from following screen shots.


Do you think memory is faulty ?

The memory test is telling you that it’s faulty.
You could try taking it out, cleaning the gold contacts and re-seating it, but I wouldn’t put too much hope in that

Hopefully it is a memory fault.

You have 2 memory modules in the laptop 2GB each?


(a)Switch the laptop off, remove the battery and disconnect all external cables. Switch the laptop on holding the button down for about 30 seconds to drain any residual charge

with an ink pen (not pencil) mark the top sim with a number 2 and take it out like shown on various youtube clips.

with an ink pen (not pencil) mark the bottom sim with a number 1 and take it, now by putting the bottom sim back reseats the sim. Dont put 2 back yet.

Run the memory test if it fails do (a) again take out sim 1 and replace it with sim 2, and run the memory check again, this time it should be perfect indicating sim 1 is bad

take a picture of both side of sim 2 (you want to be able to read the labels) and buy a matching cheap one of the same specs from ebay


It it is not the memory then it is the addressing issue which is a new mboard

If it is the memory, and most likely will be, good time to upgrade to 8gig, if your laptop supports it?
