Dee, it is a difficult one as already said; I would carry on trying to get her to see that its usable though I dont think I would tell her about the cake ingredients!!

They might not always be near to you to help them out - you're a great neighbour - and it would certainly help their cash situation if she understood what she's wasting.

D&DD I don't think I would tell her either, is a tricky one, you never know if someone will be offended or not. Or maybe next time she brings them say - I would like to make you something with them actually, I will still compost anything that isn't safe/usable.

What about maybe suggesting that she should try cooking these fruit and veg off or blanching them and freezing them before they turn?

Some people are a bit finiky with food, I know if my partner knew things I had used had bits on them or had gone 'out of date' he would be a bit funny about it, but what doesn't know doesn't hurt. Tackling waste was my biggest part of reducing our grocery spending.

and i feel really chilled out.i'm so chuffed. lounge is a mess , but nothign 2 sec's won't sort out.

my kids helped me make the carrot cake so made even more mess.

ddd i added a teaspoon of almond essence to the sponge mixture for the bakewell as i like it really almondy.

i found the ground rice in morrisons. 50 something p a box. i got 2 as couldn't rememeber how much i needed. so now got loads in. lol

i've took a pic of jam tarts as daughter has eyed them up so don't think they be around for long.

I've just flicked through a couple of my books and the thing that caught my eye was in the 'River Cottage Meat Book'..I do love Hugh...
He has a recipe in there where he does a 'toad in the Hole' BUT adds pheasant breast to it too... does sound rather yummy..(apart from the fact he slit the breasts and put prunes in them..we need a gagging icon..)
Part cook the breasts at the same time *wrapped in bacon* as you part cook the sausages then chuck the batter over as normal..now I want one..

He also says they barbecue well *if you have a thick parka to wear while out there* brrrrr...

Cover the breast with streaky bacon & butter too as they dry out if you are not careful. Gas 6 for an hour to hour and a half for a full bird. Traditionally served with Game Chips, which to me are just thick potato crisps served hot. (Good at any time with a dip!!) My ex MIL always had redcurrant jelly with too. :-)
  • Ooooo, you're all so busy baking. My revisiting my old style ways has sent me off into a baking frenzy but we don't really eat cake (middle age spread and all that) and we only use it when the family and other visitors come, so my freezer is groaning.

Dee, I am going to have to squeeze a carrot cake in, I have been looking for a carrot cake traybake for ages.

How lovely to think of making stuff for your neighbour when you have already so much to do. Just make it for now and maybe it will come up in conversation at a later date and you will be able to confess all.

Happy baking to one and all.

    Bella.

    Thank you for the recipes!

We're having it roast, with butter and streaky bacon on top, with crispy roast potatoes and whatever veg I find first in the freezer! If we had a garden Tim would be out there bbq-ing it I bet, he loves Hugh FW!

I'll try the toad in the hole one next week I think - sounds gorgeous!

Only another 45mins to wait until it's done :j

Also I've got a chicken curry cooking on the hob which will go in the freezer later (had some yogurt that needs using up), and after dinner I need to make some cheese and onion pasties and try the hobnob recipe, and a sour cream cake recipe I got in the Guardian baking guide yesterday.

I need to have a big tidy up too, and we are decorating our Christmas tree tonight, I am so excited and couldn't wait any longer :o

    Busy evening here :D

Argh, I'm allergic to putting decorations up early, my sister usually has hers up from 13th November, most of where we used to live have theirs up now, they just end up half falling down and all sad looking by Christmas in our house. DS2 who's obsessions are lights and anything canine would have them up all year if he could! He loves reindeers too and has a BIG reindeer light, he has an obsession for every season, pumkpins at Halloween, reindeers and lights at Christmas etc.

Right well dinner was ok, precooked food from left overs like yorkshires and mashed potato came in very handy. Going to have a mooch in the cupboards after the kids go to bed, see what else I need for the Xmas pud recipe, now I have read it can be done in the slow cooker I am a little less scared :o might see what I will need to do carrot cake aswell, I have lots of carrots that need using.

  • Hi,
I've been lurking on this site since the beginning and have resisted buying a doughnut maker...until now!
I had earmarked the russell hobbs one but accidently bought one called 'Indulgence' by Mistral(?) RH one is called 'Temptation' - easy mistake LOL.
    But I'm so disappointed.
The recipe said 1 sachet of baking powder so i guessed 1tsp.
Also how much mixture do you put?
My doughnuts were very flat and stodgy.
Can someone post their recipe for me to try please.
