Quite hard to offer any suggestions on the information you've given so far.

Presumably you are paying your personal trainer, as he is providing a service, in the same way you pay a cleaner, a gardener, or a child minder. How about a thank you card and a bottle of wine/box of chocs.

A few months of training is a short time for you to have become good friends. No need to go overboard with a more personal gift.

you could buy him running shoes.

What if he's not a runner?
Just because he's a personal trainer doesn't mean he's into running.

Have you no idea whatsoever of anything he'd appreciate?
    Music?
    Books?
    Hobbies?

If your good friends as you say then surely you should have more of an idea of what gift to get.

An Amazon voucher so he can buy what he would like whether its a cd, a film or a book.

These are things you'd expect a friend to know.

I've a feeling OP is confusing friendship and someone doing their job.

The first year with my PT I got him a mug from Amazon saying something about PT's on, and put a Nando's gift card & protein bars in it, and a few other bits. Had been with him a year then, 3 yrs on he's my best friend x
