Sturmey Archer 3 speed bike fault

I have a three speed Sturmey Archer geared bike.

When you select first gear, after a few seconds, something slips and the chain just turns without producing any drive; any idea what is wrong and how to fix it?

    My friend who fixes bikes says you put the bike into second gear and you have to adjust the gear cable,I think he said around where the toggle chain goes into the hub.
