Cashing a cheque without a bank account

I'm just opened a basic barclays account - just waiting for confirmation now, we have decided that this account will just be in my name (OH is preparing to go bankcrupt and has decided hed rather have just me as the bank accout holder), the only problem i can see in doing this is he does sometimes gets cheques - could these still be paid into my account although they are payable to him or will he need to open an account himself after BC to cash them and then pass teh cash to me?
I know years ago you could sign the back of a cheque and have it paid into someones account - is this still allowed. He really doesn't want the responsibility of any bank account after BC.
Hope someone can advise.
Hoping we get the SOA and letters to send creditors from CCS in post 2moz so i can get the next part rolling, a step nearer to the big day

You can't pay his cheque into your account. There are places that cash cheques but don't know how they work. Can your OH open an account just for times he needs it, let the cheque clear then put the money into your account?

No the cheque has to be in your name, I've been down this route. Open a cashminer account for your OH prior to going BR and when gone RB tell the OR.
If you get really desperate then your OR can cash the cheque at Cash Converters. They do charge for this and will ring the company that issue the cheque to make sure its OK, I backed out at the last min as they were going to ring my employer to confirm that it was OK. I'm keeping my BR a secret!0 -

Just make sure that your OH has an excuse just in case the OR questions this, like "Where has that money gone"0 -
If your hunny has not yet gone BR then could he get a basic account set up just for cashing cheques/keeping small amounts of money in?
I know he said he doesnt want the responsibility of a bank account but to be honest if he is going BR then thats the least of his worries with regard to responsibility in the future. Other things to look into are low cost cheque cashing companies? The only problem with that is your paying someone for your money, not money saving but it couls be your only hope. Other than that can he have cheques made in your name?
Hey, just another quick thing love, make sure all your details are kept seperate. Dont let both your credit files to be mixed in with each other or you might be in trouble!
Good Luck with it all and hope it works out in the end!

Technically, yes - it's just not possible.
Having said that, I've a personal account and a joint account with my wife at my bank - and I've one or twice accidentally paid a cheque made out to my wife into my personal account, and it has cleared. She's kept her own surname, which is nothing like mine, so I was surprised no one picked this up!
One of my relations is a bank worker, and I asked them about this. They said that it was quite common - basically, for small value cheques, it's cheaper just to process them automatically and then issue refunds when someone complains; only larger value cheques are manually checked before they are presented for payment. They weren't sure about the threshold, but thought for their bank it was about £1,000.
No promises that this is actually true or applies to your bank; but hope it helps.
cheers

I found Brighthouse to be the cheapest to cash cheques for the sake of speed. At the time the bank was taking 5 working days and often we could not wait.
If you can wait for cheque to clear it is much better to have it paid into an account and if he can get a basic account after bankruptcy it will save him a lot of money.0 -

Why are you keeping your BR a secret from your employer? Is it going to affect your current job? They would find out sooner or later.BR 4/10/07

remember everybody has their own reasons for keeping things like this secret & sometimes dont feel the need to post here & explain why, I kept the BR secret from nearly everyone for a while before I decided to tell peopleWe all die. The point I'm trying to make is, the employer may not like being deceived regarding the BR, why potentially put any revenue stream at risk especially at this time?BR 4/10/07
