A desperate plea for help from a technical idiot:o
I have had BT Broadband installed at home this month & have had nothing but problems with obtaining & maintaining a connection. Their help desk, after exhausting lots of other options, is now suggesting that I have the VBS.YPSAN virus & that I need to download some kind of removal tool.
I am already running AVG Anti-virus which isn't detecting anything.
The only info I can find on this proposed virus is on Symantec.com which is an update to Norton anti-virus. Can anyone tell me if I now need to buy Norton & install their latest upgrade to deal with this? I am sceptical as, although the symptoms fit the virus description they have also fitted the description of every other solution that BT have suggested to date & I don't want to pay out unecessarily (already had hard drive checked for a non-existant fault at my cost on BT's suggestion!)
Many thanks

It is odd that they are saying this as it is a mass mailing worm, do you use MS Outlook? Here is some info http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_102550.htmEver stop to think and forget to start again?0

You're right to be sceptical about BT's diagnosis. You can check for yourself whether it really is the VBS.YPSAN virus (or a variant) by going through the first few Technical Details on the Symantec site - http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/vbs.ypsan.e@mm.html
For items 1 to 3, use Windows Explorer to see if the files/folders refered to have been created or deleted. If not, then you haven't got the VBS.YPSAN virus.
Has your broadband connection ever been working?
What is the make and model of your ADSL modem?

And you have firewall, right? You absolutely MUST have a firewall with Broadband.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
Thanks everyone, I have decided to switch from AVG to Norton & upgrade the standard XP firewall to one of the ones recommended in the "What is the best Anti-virus" thread, I am already using firefox & I don't use MS outlook. I haven't run through the files & tried to locate if I have this vireus yet, will do that tonight & probably be back pleading for more assitance then:oPost Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p

If you don't believe what AVG is telling you use a free online anti virus scanner.
Run two to be safe and if you are still clean than why buy Nortons - if you still prefer to buy a anti virus product then IMHO there are better about.
As already stated you will need a firewall - does your modem/router already have one.0 -
Lillibet,
There's no need to change from AVG, many people who visit this site use it and it is free. A lot of people have also commented that it's not a good idea to run more than one antivirus as it can cause conflicts, so I would stick with AVG (after all it's found the virus... if it is a virus).
I think you'll find the answer by following what others have already said on this thread.
Have a look at What security do you use? to see what other mse'ers use. Also there's a lot of info under FAQ's / Internet Security - Free! Viruses!.Torgwen.....................
