iPad Air broken home button

Hi
I bought an iPad Air in Feb 2014 from John Lewis.
I have been to Apple today to ask them about a repair and to repair it she said it would cost £239. She told me to go back to John Lewis to see what they say.
I phoned John Lewis and he has said as it is out of the two year warranty I will have to pay for the repair.
My question is can I claim that it was not fit for purpose and last a reasonable amount of time? I think I have six years for this. I only want it repaired.
Thanks.

You have a statutory right to seek a remedy from the seller for up to six years following the sale.
You may however be asked to prove that the problem is due to an inherent fault.0 -
Or get it done for a fraction of the cost by an indie..

Mine went on mine, but interesting fixed itself after I dropped it. Pity that also put a crack in the screen. So it maybe just dirt ingress and a clean may sort it
If that does not work you can add a virtual one which is what I did.

You could also purchase a replacement home button from amazon for ~£5 and replace it yourself from YouTube videos if you are that way inclined. It’s pretty straight forward0
