There is nothing wrong with Spain providing you choose the right area.
We have a flat in a area called Gandia, its about 40 mins from Valencia and 2 hours flying time from Bristol.
Our flat is in the Port of Gandia, which is totally Spanish, the area is called La Safor and is known for orange & lemon groves.
We do not have ex-pat clans, in fact we do not have a English bar....totally Spanish, life in Gandia is safe & secure, the cost of living is also much cheaper and the locals are wonderful people.
Can I suggest that you rent before you make the decision to buy as what looks wonderful in the summer season can be totally different out of season.
I agree about Benidorm, its awful.
BeemPlease pull my nightie down when you have finished0 -

Benidorm isn't " Spain " it is " Blackpool by Air "..do not think all of Spain is like Benidorm, it isn't.
As another member has said, there are area's like Gandia, where you will hardly find any Brits, just really friendly Spanish people.0 -

I suppose you are right (I haven`t been to Blackpool though) . Lets have some ideas of the nicer parts then.0 -
i would go for the north of spain which is green and lovely with no ex pats, which is nothing like benidorm, although i found benidorm at easter one year full of spanish and really not that bad
mind you even that sort of money restricts what you could buy in some areas in the north
if i had that money i would invest it and spend on holidays as sam bee said0 -

The majority of what I've seen of Spain is "nice". if you avoid places like Benidorm. I hate people who say they don't like Spain. Spain is a vast country with 17 autonomous region, all different.0 -
The problem with the north of spain is the winters are not all that warmi would go for the north of spain which is green and lovely with no ex pats, which is nothing like benidorm, although i found benidorm at easter one year full of spanish and really not that bad

Do you intend to retire there when finished?
Otherwise, how about this.
Invest the money (earning, what, £8-£10,000 a year - not my specialist area!).
Use the interest to pay for your amazing holidays every year. Go to different countries, see new places every holiday. Imagine what type of holidays you could have with a £10k holiday budget. Yes, you can go to France if you want. Or the Galapagos Islands, or Easter Island. With that budget you can take your family and friends most years!
I like Sam's suggestion
Not a bad idea to consider your options.
If you are planning on buying a home abroad, make sure you read up on legal stuff as well if you do find a country that suits... Especially with the US and their tax system and legalties... If you've ever watched any shows about buying property abroad, then you should already know that there's some dodgy deals about. Seek expert advice before you get into any legal agreement!0
