How can I find out what properties someone owns

Is there any way I can find out whether a particular person owns properties without knowing the specific addresses?

  • Assuming they're financially associated, with at least one joint debt between them, then HIS debts will probably show up on HER credit file.

Not sure, however, if a mortgage or secured loan would show the address to which the debt related - but it might be worth having a look.

Or find a way to apply for his credit file? :o

    Obviously she shouldn't...

  • No - it won't show the purpose of the loan. But it does show the type of credit, so a mortgage appears as "Mortgage" :)

But the property against which the mortgage is secured is not listed (just checked my Credit File).

Yes, they can lie - but remember that a personal loan has a limit of £25k - after that, it must be a mortgage or secured against an asset. Usually secured against a property, but other assets may be accepted too.

So, hypothetically speaking, if I had a BIL who used to be a Bank Manager for a number of branches and he has a wife who still works with the bank, and they were a little bit naughty they could perhaps obtain his credit file?

Not that I'd do this of course;) and I'm sure they wouldn't because of the Data Protection Act.

    Mmmmmm

Well, erm ..... yes ... but it only shows debt and not assets.

Would her solicitor be able to request his credit file to verify his personal circumstances are as he says they are?

I wondered that. But I think you need someone's permission to run a credit check on them.

Perhaps a Private Detective is the way to go .....

Can you find away of contacting him via a third party who could pretend to be doing a programme/article about property investment? They could then ask about how many he owns and get a few more details. If they managed to get out town names or even street names then it would be easier to track them down more precisely.

Tell her to see a solicitor dealing with divorce. If necessary she can see if he's prepared to stick to his story under penalty of perjury. Hopefully it won't go that far.

He can be ordered to disclose this information by a judge. His solicitor will know this and suggest that he provides the information without the unnecessary expense of going to court. If he does have a secret portfolio of properties it will be in her interest to have a solicitor to act for her to get this information out into the open.

As this is a divorce matter I would suggest that you first invest in the
which guide to divorce which will cost you areound £12 and also post on www.ondivorce.co.uk .
What the above poster says about a judge and disclosure is true, but you need to find out asap what assets it is likely that the ex may have. A credit report (and I am sure as a wife you wouldn't find it that hard to get) will show debts, but if thee are secured or large loans then the comapnaies will be named and when it comes to full disclosure these should be submited and questions can be asked of their origin purpose andstatus.
Also do not forget to take any pensions into acount etc.
