Salary & Tax Calculator

Looking for guidance in the absence of getting through to HMRC.

I've been offered a new employment opportunity which will have an annual salary plus cash allowance in place of a company car.

I want to find the best means of calculating how much this new package will mean I will earn per month less tax so that I can compare this against what I currently earn after tax.

I also live in Scotland and will need to check if different rules apply in Scotland compared to the rest of the UK.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Generally car allowance is just seen as additional income so added to salary and taxed (and NI) at the normal tax rates, with no change to your tax code.

A company car is seen as a taxable benefit, the company must provide the info to HMRC and HMRC will reduce your tax code accordingly.

As far as I am aware, there are no differences between Scotland and the rest of the UK in relation to income tax rates or taxable benefits.

Scottish higher rate tax band starts at £43,001 rather than £45,000 elsewhere the calculators provided do not cover Scotland. I have not verified this one but try

  • Many thanks for the link.
  • You may need to be careful when calculating your taxable monthly salary if you are paying into a company pension

You might find only the salary is counted for pension purposes and no pension accrues on the "car allowance". So taxable salary each month might be along lines of,

    Salary £3000
    Less 8% pension £240
    Taxable salary £2760
    Car allowance £400
    Total taxable pay £3160
