Gov.uk email

I have just received an email from what appears to be a genuine GOV.UK suggesting they owe me £268 tax rebate and "click here" to set up a gov gateway account to reclaim the money. I've clicked and began to fill in the form online but stopped when it requested my card details. Anyone else had this? I suspect a scam but both websites look legit.

What is the exact email address the message was sent from, and the address of the web page you have gone to? Click on the message details to find it. I'd be certain it is a scam.

You need to do a virus check now on your computer, it's quite possible you've now got a virus.
  • I've had a few rebates, most recently 2 months ago. The first I knew of it was a letter with a cheque at the bottom.

Tax rebate emails should be treated with suspicion.

This is a well publicised scam.
  • Thanks for the replies. Yep I thought after I posted they always write. Equally you can't navigate round the fake website (which was very good )

Hopefully, you have forwarded the hoax email to HMRC so they can pursue the miscreants?
