Will I get paid this month??

So I start my new job at PWC on Monday 4th December, I asked the agency who I got the job through whether they could find out when first payment would be aka end of December or end of January so that I could sort out all my bills and make areangements if need be.

They came back with:

Payday is typically the last working day of the month.
The payday in December is the 22nd december and payroll cut off is the 10th every month.

Does that mean because I’m starting before payroll cut off I will receive my wages on the 22nd December and will it be a full months work?

    I doubt it.

I imagine you will be paid for the work you do from 04/12/17 to 10/12/2017. On the 22/12/17.

Your first 'full' wage will probably be at the end of January.

They might have different payment arrangements but i would think this is the most usual.

I'd guess, & there will be more knowledgeable folk than me on here, that you will be paid your basic salary for the whole month on the 22nd Dec. That's what happens here, our payroll cut off date for this month is also the 10th (usually the 15th) but this is more in relation to overtime etc rather than days worked as everyone is salaried.

I started on the 10th of April & got paid on the 25th April for my whole April salary.

The only people who can tell you for sure are the new employers.

If you were working for my firm, payment is made half in advance and half in arrears, so the payment on 31st December (or 22nd) would cover the period from 15th-Dec to 15th Jan, so you would get slightly more than your normal monthly pay to include the 4th-15th Dec.

However, I'm aware from people who have moved from on to another that our competitors at the other end of the town pay in arrears and start from the first whole pay period, so if you were working fro them, you wouldn't get paid anything at all until January.

My reading of what your recruiter has told you is that you are likely to get paid as you start before the cut off date, but that may depend on how quickly they process adding new joiners to their system, and also on whether you are paid in advance or in arrears.

I'd suggest that you budget on the assumption you won't get paid until January and raise it when you have your induction on day 1 so you are clear.

I wouldn't have thought that was the most usual for someone the size of PWC. Normally they'd pay you some time in the month for the whole of the month.

Agreed. The cut off date is just for getting any changes in - so if you started after the 10th, you wouldn't get paid till the end of January, but as you started before, you should be fine.

I would work on the assumption you won't be paid and make arrangements accordingly. Then, if you are paid, it's a bonus; but you won't be in any difficulties if you're not.

    Clearly not.

The first 3 replies all stated 3 different methods.

My previous employer paid the way i mentioned and whilst not quite as big as PWC they do have tens of thousands of staff in the uk.

Im just assuming that the employee would be paid pro rata. They havent done nor will they complete that month of work, why would they be paid for it? I can imagine it might get expensive for the company come leaving time trying to recover anything.

Because that's what generally happens (for every company I have worked for, anyway) with salaried staff. You can equally well ask why should they do any work before they have been paid for it? There's trust involved on both sides. Is what you refer to for salaried staff or for hourly paid?

Obviously they would almost always know before the 25th or the month, or whenever, if an employee was leaving before the end of the month.

Make sure that on your first day you give in your P45, or ask about completing a New Starter form. Make sure you have the information you need for that - your NINo for starters. and make sure you give whichever of those forms it is to the right person so that it gets actioned for the payroll. Try to find out where it needs to end up, and see if you can check that it has actually arrived after a couple of days.

Also have you shown them your passport yet? If not, take that in on the first day.

And you will no doubt need to give them your bank details, so if you don't know them off by heart, make sure you have them with you.

Do that and you should get SOMETHING on 22nd December. Fail to get the paperwork right, and there'll be nothing.

    the info you require.

Pay period : the dates a period of pay runs
The pay date : the date the pay for that period is paid.
The cutof dates : these could be for extra days to be added to the pay period like time sheets, overtime, expenses these can have their own pay periods and pay dates but most places seem to lump these in with the same pay date.

The most common pay period is calendar
other will be dates like 15th-14th
or as posted by spadoosh 11th to 10th

The most common pay dates are somewhere near the end of the month described in various ways and adapted for weekends
