Hi there,

First post so i hope this is ok and in the correct place!

We have been with SSE since 2012 on their Standard Superdeal tariff as we are on electricity only as we live in the middle of nowhere! Do any of you good people know which other suppliers offer an alternative Superdeal/Flexiplus meter?

Many thanks,

Stan

It is unlikely that anyone will take on your metering as they are usually supplier specific. To change supplier, and retain a tariff that is suitable for heating, you will need to have the meter changed to E7 or E10 which could involve a cost and possibly wiring changes to your system. You can move to a single rate, which is not really suitable for the majority of electric heating systems, at no cost.

AFAIK, the only alternative is Economy 7, but of course you would not get the afternoon boost. However, doing some sums recently I worked out that the heating cost of Superdeal is now so high that it is about on a par with taking the cheapest Economy 7 tariff from someone else and having extra day usage.

(You could get Economy 10 from SSE, but I think that is very pricey also.)

SSE have said that i can stay on the Superdeal setup but access ANY of their other tariffs which i find a bit strange but i will give them a call later to see what this means in real terms.

So just to clarify, no other suppliers offer a Flexiplus/Superdeal arrangement?

Nope. That's why they sucked people in. They got loads of people to install these systems back in the 90's, and have increased the heating cost by an average of 8% per year. Over 20 years, that's a five fold increase. There is no competition, so a nice little earner for them.

I believe that will mean any of their single rate tariffs as mandated by The Energy Market Investigation (Restricted Meters) Order 2016.

Just found this advert from the nineties. I bet o/p's house doesn't cost £6.50 a week to run now. :(

Slightly more than that.... but then it's now twice the size it was then and has a few more people living in it! ;)

After a few sums it's more like £17.50 per week!

I reckon we use 5000-5500kwh per year and that's about (or just below?) average for a 4 bed house with two small children with the washing machine going all the time?!?! But could be cheaper...

I'm loathe to come off the Superdeal tariff as we get the boost of energy in the afternoons for the storage heaters. We've just had an extension with underfloor heating and a heat pump so i'm looking at the figures for a bit to see how that affects the usage and cost!

    Are you sure, Stan?

I can see that 5500 units might be your day rate consumption, but what about night & stored heat?

For comparison, my 3 bed detached house in Berkshire on Economy 7 consumes 1763 day units, 9265 night units and 6721 kWh of gas.
