    Hi wolfman,

On what do you base your advice on avoiding Q-Tec PSUs?

I've bought a couple of dozen of these over the years - mainly as replacements for the dreaded Mercury PSUs. I've only had one Q-Tec failure in about 7 years and it was during the warranty period so was replaced at once.

I had a gold Q-Tec 500W psu a couple of years back and found the rails on it a little unstable. Didn't quite go to the extent of hooking it up to a voltmeter, but as I overclock quite often I like to monitor the system. Typical apps such as SpeedFan usually provide quite a good reading. They generally don't have a great reputation.

It's not a bad budget psu but it's not great either, I'd always spend that little bit extra and go for a better known brand.

do not us inferior parts on a pc especially a psu it the hart off your system ,
it mite seem to work right put then you will start to get error’s for no reason and nothing you do will fix it unless you change the psu ,seen it too many times thinking that a psu is just a psu there not .
that’s if it is the psu, if it is then look at someting like this http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.asp?product_id=4623&category_id=263&manufacturer_id=0&tid=hpu-4s350
buy the looks off you system it should work alright put if it is an old AT motherboard it mite be time to do a full upgrade (psu are hard to get for that type of motherboard , i only found one on ebay)
there or their, one day i might us the right one ,until then tuff

Thanks for all replies. Will have a look inside and give it a clean and if I need to replace the psu then I will get one with right number of connectors.

I was wondering is it a false ecomomy and maybe dangerous to buy a cheapish one on ebay, or should I head down to pc world or maplin to buy one?

    Thanks again

If you do clean it, I would almost definately opt for compressed air, blowing it will fill it with moisture and vacumming it will cause static build up.

Although you dont want to be paying through the nose, don't opt for the cheapest one around. With regards to connectors I shouldnt worry too much, all you really require are the standard motherboard molex connectors, and one molex connector for the cd or dvd drive and a sata power cable for the hdd, (Assuming its a sata hdd). Any PSU on the market would have these connectors as standard so I shouldn't worry too much about that.

You should be looking to spend between £15-£20 give or take a pound or two. and should aim for about a 400W
