I found this (dunno how accurate it is, haven't read the relevant Act:http://www.cash4coins.co.uk/how-much-can-legally-pay-coins/
I always get a little antsy when someone publicises in the media that they paid some unwanted fine/ bill in very small change, clearly marking themselves as the Hero Little Person sticking it to The Man.
Err, nope, you just ensured that some low-wage drone (like me) got to count out your change and very tedious it was, too. Big of you, huh?
If you ask, banks will hand over bank bags with no questions asked (in my experience anyway) and then you can put them in the quantities/ types for fast weighing.
I admit, the little kid in me quite enjoys watching the coins spin around the hopper in nat west's coin counting machine.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

My bank will only allow 5 bags at a time so could take a while if you have loads. However I also have a Metrobank account and generally just use their money counting machine. You get a slip of paper with the total amount on it and you have a choice of having it changed for cash or paying direct into a bank. But of course this option is only open to you if you have a Metro near you.

Some HSBC branches have coin machines too. Rather than spitting out a receipt for you to take to the counter you just put your card into the machine and then tip the coins in. I've never been able to find a list of which branches offer it but I think their online chat people can tell you.0

Yep, I use my HSBC branches coin counting machine too, the money goes straight into my current account. Before that I used to bank with TSB and when I asked if they had a limit on change bags they said they didn't, but if there were a lot of bags that I should go during the quiet times of the day if possible.#39 - Save £12k in 20250

I have a purse rule that I try not to accumulate more than 10p in coppers or, with a few silvers, my purse is so heavy that I end up walking with a lisp.:rotfl:
I do collect £2 coins in a tin, though; they've come in very handy a couple of times when we've still had a bit of month left at the end of the money.;)If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -
always bag it up and pay it into my bank account, never had a problem with that. I would never use the coinstar machine at the SM as it charges me to change the money up , the bank does it for free.0

Metro Bank branches all have a “magic money machine” for just this purpose (although I know they aren’t as widespread as other banks). I think they are free at the point of use, because I’ve been told by staff that buskers use them.
