Changing up loose change.

Options
I am having a major declutter of my house and have come across a big box of change (all legal tender) that we used to our spare change into.

There is a lot of change in there and I was wondering what to do with it.

Coinstar seem a bit of a ripoff and my local bank will only take a limited number of change bags at any one time.

I have read that Natwest often have free coin sorting machines - is it worth having an account just to have access to this facility?

If there is a serve yourself checkout at your S/m why not just chuck handfuls in as you pay?

I'd be interested in this option too - is there a list of NatWests that offer this? Do any other banks?

I have heard that Metro bank has this at all branches, although this bank is very sparse in certain areas of the country.

As banks now charge small businesses for low numbers of bags of change,my local rural post office has stepped in to offer bags of change.Ask them for bags and of course you will have to count it out yourself.

this is what I did with mine, took a few weeks to use it all but i'm far too tight fisted to be charged for changing it. the worst bit was carrying it in my bag but had I been mugged it would've made a decent 'cosh' :D

Of course most local, small charities would take it, also if you know anyone doing charity stalls or Xmas fairs, they would happily change it for a float.
If you don't want to do that, I would put it in a pot by the door, do as purpleybat says, but it's also handy for carol singers and charity bucket night at the pub.
    It will soon go!

:( Coinstar charge 9.9 % and it astonishes me that anyone does business with them. I've used the NatWest's coin counting machines (quite amusing) for a pal who is a change-hoarder and they're simple and you get a till spit you take to pay onto your account.

I'd just trickle-feed them back into your daily spends and they'll eventually disappear. I have a purse rule that I try not to accumulate more than 10p in coppers or, with a few silvers, my purse is so heavy that I end up walking with a lisp.:rotfl:

Don't banks you have an account with allow you to pay them in to anymore?. That's what I always did, bagged them into the correct amounts using the banking bags I'd previously asked for. Some used to limit how many you paid in at any one time.
  • The post office while they won’t change money for you, will allow you to pay an unlimited amount into your bank account (which can be a main high st bank).

I decanted my £2 jar into money bags recently and they duly accepted all of it. They will also give you an ample supply of money bags.

We collect 1p, 2p, 5p and £2 coins in various jars and, so long as they’re bagged and tagged, haven’t had a problem with cashing them in at the bank. Bagging them up properly is the important thing, as is keeping the different bags of coins separate - it means that the bank can quickly weigh the bag, instead of a cashier counting it.

IIRC, a business can refuse to take more than a certain amount of coinage - don’t remember how much (?? £2 ??) - but a bank cannot. (Of course, not having grown up in the UK that may be Australian law, not British.)
