Signing-on process - how long from end date?

How long after you leave a full-time job with a large corporation, does it take to "sign-on"?

My income protection insurance needs evidence of me "signing on" as a trigger for my claim, but my policy expires approx 1 month after my end-date at work, so I need to get my claim in before that.

I have no idea how long it takes my employer to provide a P45 . Are these normally available for people to take home with them on their last day? On the other hand, can I formally "sign on" before I get my P45 in my hand - in case it takes my employer some weeks to provide?

thanks
Rachel.

You can claim from the day after your job ends- you don't need to have your P45 to start a benefits claim and get the proof you need for your policy. Your P45 will probably not arrive until after you have finished and you can send to DWP when you get it.
