Changing car with private plate - advice how

Options
Hi all

I would appreciate some help on sequencing transition of car and private license plate

A. I have bought and arranged to collect new car on 20/12. Ideally I would like it registered with my private plate on collection.
B. I am going away on holiday on 5/12 to 19/12. The current car will stay at home in a secure (gated) courtyard

I am insured with esure and I understand I would need to pay a £25 admin charge for any changes, so that would be (£50 - one charge to change registration on policy, second charge to change registered vehicle when I collect it)

So. What is my best option?
1. Complete the V317 Online this week, contact insurance and pay the £25 and put new plates on car, then pay second charge for new car when I collect it?
2. Wait till just before I go away and complete the V317? Don’t contact insurance but new V5 arrives while I’m away in time for me to collect new car. Drive old car on private plates and then make one change with insurance (new car)

Or something else? Appreciate any advise, I am generally of the risk averse/low stress disposition so am looking for the simplist and cleanest approach - without unnecessarily throwing money away

Thank you

  • Will esure definitely charge £25 for changing just the reg? I ask because over the years I've not been charged once for putting my plate on or taking it off whatever car I have at the time.
  • As far as I understand yes but will call tomorrow to clarify

You can transfer personal number instantly on line. The charge is £80.

Transfer number and fit plates to your new car before you collect it and insure it with the personalised number.

If you are buying from a dealer ask him to do it for you.
