i know what you mean about society making you feel you should be working. My husband and I had fertility problems and tried 7 years to get pregnant with my daughter ( we'd had problems when having my son too) unfortunately we split up when my kids were 10 and 2 years old. Before we split up he was the provider and I was the stay at home mum.Fully acceptable!!
now I am classed as a single parent receiving benefits and according to lots of people including the government I should be back at work.
I feel guilty about receiving benefits but unless I go back to work full time it wouldn't be worth it financially.I want to be here for my kids before and after school as I personally feel this is important.I desperately wanted my children and want to be part of their growing up.I worked all the time my son was young and I missed so much, I don't want to miss my daughters milestones.
I do voluntary work at my daughters school, which makes me feel better about receiving benefits.I am also putting this to some use and training as a teaching assistant so that I can apply for jobs that will enable me to have weekends and holidays with my kids.
Don't be hard on yourself.Remember being a mum is a fulltime job itself and If we got paid for that then we wouldn't have so many money problems, lost my way but now I'm back ! roll on 2013
