my Father passed away recently and a couple of years ago signed up to a 20 year solar panel lease. What happens to this following his passing? Also the company who. He signed up with has since dissolved ? How will I know who to contact ? Many thank for any advice that can be given . Thanks ashy

Explain what you mean by a lease.

Is this a rent a roof system, where he got "free" solar panels and does not get any payment?

Or did he pay for the panels and signed a 20 year Feed In Tariff contract where he gets the payment?

It sounds very much like a 'rent a roof' contract where he signed a form of lease to allow the company access to their equipment on his roof.

Unless there are special provisions for the death of the house owner, I believe the lease is binding on any future owner of the house - it certainly would be if your father had sold the house.

The firm would have been MCS registered and they might have details of the new owners and information on the death of house owner.

Did your father involve his solicitor when he signed the lease?

I suggest you re-post this in the green and ethical section of this forum as that is where the majority of solar owners contribute.

I'd start by contacting the administrators of the company he signed up with-they will know who the assets have been sold onto. The contract will remain valid, regardless of who now owns it.
Has the property been sold, if so I hope the new owners were aware of this arrangement?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

If it had been sold, the buyer's solicitor would(should!) have informed them of the lease on the property.

And why would Ashy be asking if the property had already been sold?
  • Sorry for the late reply. The property hasn’t been sold .i. Looking at buying my brother out and applying for a remortgage . And yes it was free solar panels , rent a roof scheme which he signed into for 20 years .
