I wrote to RBS a few couple of months ago regarding a loan I had in 1996ish. The letter stated this:

'Around 1996 I took out a car loan with you for a car I purchased from the John Martin group in Nissan Cumbernauld, Stirling. The loan was around £7500 and I remember paying £168 per month for 4 years.

The car was a red Nissan Primera registration XXXX XXX. My address at the time was XXXXXXXXXX. My date of birth is XXXXXXXXXX.

I wish to reclaim the PPI I had with that loan.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.'

I received a reply from them last week which stated :

Thank you for your recent complaint regarding Payment Protection Insurance.

Policy numbers

If you have already given some of this information in your original complaint, there is no need to provide it again. Once we locate the relevant account from your additional information we will register and investigate your complaint.

You can provide this information in writing or via our dedicated telephony team who can register your complaint during the call.

Please do not send originals or make any amendments or highlight any part of the documents you send as this may affect their legibility.

If you have any queries with regards to the above please contact us on 0800 015 0319.

I have no further paperwork as I have moved house several times since then and it's all been lost.

Are there any further steps I can take?

    No. Dead end.
Do you remember even having it . The £168 may have have been just the car payment
What makes you think you have griunds to complain about it if you did have it

Did you take out the loan directly with RBS, or did you take it out with the car dealership? If you held a current account with RBS and paid by direct debit it might be possible to obtain transactional data by way of a Subject Access Request, however, you will need the locate the account number first.

The loan was with Lombard Direct and I recall having to take out insurance before being allowed the loan.

Lombard Direct PPI complaints are handled by RBS so you could send them a subject Access Request for a more indepth search of their archives, but as I said before it would really help if you could locate the loan reference number or the current account number you paid it from.
