    Hello Folks

My car needs new tyres. The front ones are currently at the following measurements and are in what could be stated as a Red status
    • N/S Inner 3.05, Mid 2.81, Outer 2.59
    • O/S Inner 2.80, Mid 2.77, Outer 2.83
    Rear Tyres, Amber Status:
    • N/S Inner 4.06, Mid 3.57, Outer 3.32
    • O/S Inner 4.30, Mid 4.10, Outer 4.05
Current tyres are 215/55R16 97W Extra Load and they are Michelin Primacy 3's. I'll probably be getting a different brand to try and save a little money.

As its now winter and the car is front wheel drive, I need to get the front sorted sooner rather than later. My budget is a little limited and I would prefer to just get the front done this month and the rear in December. Oh I'm aware that the tyre wear is uneven, there isn't anything wrong with the tracking etc I can only put it down to the condition of the roads that I drive on.

My question, is staggering my purchase a sensible thing to do or should I just bite the bullet and change all 4 at the same time.

    Look forward to your advice

Those figures suggest there IS something wrong with your suspension and you not running at the correct pressures also.

I had Primacys/Primacies (?) on my Mondeo. Great summer tyres, but at 3mm they were totally lethal in snow. With winter coming, I'd be looking to change asap.

If you can't afford to change all four, do you go for fronts for traction or rears for stability? I know the advice is to fit to the rear, but I would rather fit new tyres to the front, benefit from the improved traction and take it a bit more carefully in corners. In the OP's position, I would be seeking a way to replace all four, however. I replaced my Mich with Goodyear EfficientGrip8 winter tyres and they were brilliant, difference like night and day.

  • I decided to take all the tyre companies recommendations at face value (except Michelins, far to sensible) and now have 5 sets of tyres for each vehicle we own. Of course the back garden now looks like an ATS branch and we have to pull a trailer when we go out to take the rain/dry/mud tyres with us. It is a pain when we go to the boot sale though. I have to stay with the car in case anyone nicks the wheels/tyres in the trailer.

The figures look fine to me for one of these new fangled "independent suspension" vehicles, it is only live axles that wear the tyres flat.
We are only talking fractions of a millimetre, and I bet they only measure once, rather than half a dozen times at different places on the circumference. Always worth checking the suspension bushes and wheel alignment before fitting expensive tyres though.

If it were me though, I'd swap the backs for the fronts and run them down to the wear markers whilst saving up for 4 replacements.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

    Hi Folks

Many thanks for all your feedback. I've also noted that the Avon tyres are quite a bit cheaper than new Mic's so will probably go that way. There are a few independent tyre stockists/fitters near to where I live so I'll be price checking this week.

    Thanks

Never had a problem with Kumho KU39’s in the wet and snow. Got them on both my cars now, quite cheap too.
