I found that Admiral have a catagory for "car at home, main driver away at uni during term time" that saved the hassle and cost of adding them to a policy every holiday and enabled them to build a NCD.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. How much is her car worth? If it's not a lot, are you covered to drive it on your insurance 3rd party only - some insurers still do?0

Exacly. The mileage I do in these cars is a small part of my overall mileage, the rest is done in my own car insured in my name. Nor do I do the majority of the miles these cars cover in a year.
Meanwhile my sons have cars that they own and are insured in their names and are building up useful no claims discounts. That is my gift to them that I think justifies the extra premium over what I might get in my name. I was certainly grateful that my parents did the same for me.
When I renew the insurance each year I explain exactly the usage to the insurers and they don't bat an eyelid.
I did the same when my daughter was at Uni. Daughter only needed the car during holidays and while on a few weeks placement during first year. As a named driver I gave the car an occasional run out and it was useful when the central locking on my car malfunctioned and I needed to get to an appointment:D
Insurers were quite happy and daughter got first year NCD under her belt.2.22kWp Solar PV system installed Oct 2010, Fronius IG20 Inverter, south facing (-5 deg), 30 degree pitch, no shadingEverything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endMFW #4 OPs: 2018 £866.89, 2019 £1322.33, 2020 £1337.07

Just been in touch with my current insurers and they don't do a multi-car policy so next step is comparison sites!
I guess I could always get it put in my name....
Remember that (unless you have built up multiple NCD on additional vehicles in the recent past) you can't use your NCD on more than one vehicle at a time.2.22kWp Solar PV system installed Oct 2010, Fronius IG20 Inverter, south facing (-5 deg), 30 degree pitch, no shadingEverything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endMFW #4 OPs: 2018 £866.89, 2019 £1322.33, 2020 £1337.07

But the car is not insured. Normally cover for driving another car is if that car is insured.
Yes, as I understand it.
Having spent a large part of the day on the phone listening to some awful canned "hold" music, I reckon my cheapest option is to put the V5 in my name, get it insured and taxed so I can get some use out of it, and if she needs it when she's home, take out some temporary insurance.
[edit] seems I can only use my no claims on one car......:mad:0 -
