Esa running out

Good Morning,

I am signed off work indefinitely, I get a percentage of my wage and EDS. I have received a letter saying this stops after 1 year in January. Is there a benefit I can claim to replace this lost income?

Many thanks

    Sorry, what is EDS?

If you have been working and paying class 1 national insurance contributions then you may be able to apply for contribution based ESA.

What are your circumstances? Single? Partner? Children? Renting? Savings?

There may be other benefits but would need to know your personal circumstances.
  • Apologies it was supposed to be esa.

Yes contribution support esa will run out however I cannot get income related esa as it says I have more money coming in than law says I need to live on due, I guess to the percentage of my wage I am getting whilst signed off long term. I was wondering if something would replace it after contribution based ran out. I get Pip. Is there anything else I can get as it is 75 pounds a week which will be hard to cover my mortgage bills etc

    Thank you

You may not be entitled to income based ESA at the moment but once your wages stop then you may be.

In January what will your income/savings be?

You haven't told us your personal circumstances - partner? children? Savings? These will all make a different as to whether you are entitled to income based ESA or not as it is a means tested benefit.

Put your details into the benefit calculator on https://www.entitledto.co.uk as if it were January and see what it comes up with.

Which group are you in? WRAG/Support group?

What component(s) of PIP are you receiving?
  • Thanks so much for the response, cab have not been half as helpful.

I live alone with a mortgage. I get 60 percent of my wage whilst signed off till retirement age, which it looks like I will be. I am 38. I had cancer in my pelvis when I was 12, the pelvis has crumbled from radiotherapy damage so I cannot all without crutches I have a few other physical and mental health issues. I went to my pip assessment and was overly stoic, thinking they would put me on the highest rates considering my medical history all I spoke to including the assessor assumed I would automatically get the higher rate and mobility, but I just received the lower rate and no mobility, I contested which was Rejected so now have to go to court. I have no savings.

I don't belong to a group, would u have suggestions of which one to join. The 60% of my wage and pip covers mortgage and bills bit not much more. Tge cartilage in my good leg/knee is going, after tgat i wont be able to walk at all so i wanted tge mobility pip to help preserve it as i walk everywhere on crutches.

    Many thanks again.

I will try the benefits calculator

So you are getting a percentage of your wages until retirement age? Is this through some scheme/insurance or what? How much is it each week?

How far can you walk (repeatedly and reliably) when using the crutches before needing to stop due to discomfort?

Could you use a manual wheelchair (self propelling), and for what distance?

How much is your Income from employer? and what type of income is it officially called? Is it permanent Health Insurance and did you pay more than 50% of the premium towards it whilst you were working?
Or is it simply Employers Sick Pay? It would have to be a VERY generous employers sick pay scheme to get that sort of cover.
Ask your providor if the amount you get is reduced by the amount of ESA you get, so when your ESA runs out your providor will increase what they pay you by £73.10

In terms of your medical assessment you can do this:
Because you have been waiting a long time....if you want to...you can phone medical services 0800 2 888777 and say your ESA Conts is going to run out soon and you need to be assessed...ask to speak to a manager, they can speed it up....but be warned...you may be disallowed and your ESA closed...but you can then appeal.

In terms of ESA you can do this.
When your ESA runs out in January find the date they paid you up to then count 12 weeks from that date, then the date you want is the next day. You then wait for those 12 weeks without ESA, and then you ask ESA to reconsider your tax years for contributory from the 13th week. You will likely qualify again for another year.

    However,
You have been waiting a long time,
Did you get an ESA50 and return it?

If you did an ESA50 you should be assessed before you have to wait for the 12 weeks.

When you are assessed 3 possible outcomes
    1. Fail - claim closed and appeal for SG - wait the 12 weeks and do as I said
    2. WRAG - appeal for SG - wait the 12 weeks and do as I said.
    3. SG no need to appeal, no need to wait the 12 weeks.
