Oak Table has MDF veneered legs.

A couple of years ago, we purchased a circular oak dining table for which we paid several hundred pounds. Today, I had to remove the four legs in order to have them shortened slightly. To my surprise, I found that they were covered in oak veneer which had peeled on one leg. Worse still, the legs weren't even cut from wood, but three were moulded in MDF (medium density fibre-board) or reconstituted wood chips, and the fourth was made up of some sort of collection of wood pieces glued together. I have contacted the store, but so far have had no response. Is this a case for trading standards, and can I demand a refund? We certainly would not have bought the table if we had known that this situation obtained. We thought an oak table should be exactly that, totally constructed in oak.
Any advice appreciated.

Do you have the advert showing exactly how the table was described?

You would need to see what the advert at the time said (evidence!), then you would be potentially looking at a partial refund based on the use you have had so far.

I have seen some adverts that mention a solid oak top, hinting the legs are not!

Do you still have your receipt?
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • Thanks for the prompt replies. Sadly, we don't have the original advert, but the company website is offering similar oak tables which are described as such. My wife says she still has the receipt and, anyway, as the transaction was made via credit card, I should think that proof of purchase would still be possible. I'll come back as soon as I hear from the company.

Try using Wayback Machine to get an archived copy of the advert to support your case.

    And the website is?

Unless is was described as being 100% solid oak then I don;t think you'd have much of a case, particularly when it's just the table legs that are veneered.
