little help with fitting dishwasher please

Hi I am fitting a Bosch dishwasher for my friend and I have done them before but there is one thing I am not sure about. A lot of machines now have a funny box on the water fill hose at the tap connection.

What I need help with is do these need to go in any direction in particular? The diagrams are one of these all pictures and no words ones things that you have to figure out what they mean by the pictures (a bit like the IKea construction plans you get in flat packs with big X's over the wrong way to do it).

Most of the pictures show it with the tap above so that it hangs under the tap but there is one diagram which may be showing this box in any direction except above the tap, I am not sure about it.

The reason I ask is because I already put the isolating tap in under the sink in a horizontal plane when I did some plumbing for them before, ready for when they got a dishwasher and I put it fairly low in the kitchen unit so it will be a big palava now to come from above into this box, it would be much easier for me to stay horizontal now.

What are these boxes anyway, I am sure I was told before and have forgotten, something to shut water off if there's a fault or something?

So do they need to hang from the tap or can they come from left or right too?

Any help appreciated.

    I don't recall mine having one (it may have), I guess it's just a one-way (anti-return) valve.

My dishwasher (Miele) has one of these and on inspection so does my washing machine (Siemens). Is it something perculiar to German makes? Both of mine are connected upside down onto a isolator heading upwards from the floor. Does that make sense. Tried to upload a photo.

    Hi

Haven't fitted one of these for some time now, but the last time I saw instructions for one of these I took it to mean the hose and box (Aquastop printed on it?) should hang from a tap.
Some of then have an inlet /outlet hose combined in one hose and you would have the outlet hose pointing down if fitted onto a tap pointing up (if you see what I mean)
They are intended to stop the flow of water in the event of a serious leak.

Happy ..can you not change the tap to an elbow one?

Cheers windym for the picture and info, yes my machines, both Miele, have them, but they are hanging down and I fitted them according to instructions a long time ago. But you gave me an idea which I should have thought of before, I checked my Miele fitting instructions.

They say that you can only fit them hanging down, whereas the Bosch I am fitting does imply this is not so, but only by a poor quality picture, with no instructions, so now I am confused.

The Miele instructions go on to explain that this box contains electrical conponenets and should not be getting too wet and that this box will shut off the water if there appears to be a leak and that the hose connected to this is double skin ie has an outer sheath through which any leaking water will be fed down to a sump in the machine, wow didn't know that.

So your connections although allowing water through and thus allowing your machines to work may in fact be disabling the safety feature in their current position, not sure but suspect so.

I think I will phone up the shop that sold my friend the dishwasher and ask them as they have engineers, just hope they are willing to divulge and dont give me the usual line of get a qualified plumber.

I will let you know what I find.

Thanks also to you Canucklehead I think you will turn out to be right. Its annoying when they do the haynes manual thing on you and tell you to do something but leave out lots of details, like you should know. There must have been loads of people with connections in all directions who dont have a machine with one of these boxes and then renew their machine with one that does and the owner just fits it on, not realising, after all changing a washing machine was always a simple DIY job if all was there already.

I have just placed an order for a Hotpoint dishwasher to replace my old Zannussi that has broken. It's arriving a week on Saturday, so I have time to get advice.

Before I start a new thread, I thought I'd ask you guys how easy it is to slide out and disconnect old dishwasher and connect up the new one? My husband can help me move it but he's as (if not more) unknowledgeable about dishwaher/washing machine connection as I am.

    Thanks in advance,

It is very easy!!!! We have fitted and removed ourselves dishwasher and washing machine without any problems (when I say we, I mean OH was a viewer and man power to push things around). The only problem we had was that fill hose was too short in new house, but a trip to local plumbing supplier sorted that out!
