Prepay meter final bill

Hi all,

I'm currently having issues with Scottish Power. I moved out of my apartment in September having been on a prepay meter. I left with £4 of credit on the meter. Since then I've had emails from them saying I owe them £88, which through dialogue and emails has changed to 49 and then 44. The emails become repetitive, saying I need to get a meter reading, however it was prepay so there wasn't a meter reading and it was prepay, I paid for what I used. Am I missing something really obvious? As I thought the positive of paying an over-inflated prepay tariff was you only spend what you use, or you're left in the dark literally!? I'm getting no help through emails with SP whatsoever, was hoping someone here knew where this sort of bill would come from? thankful for any help!

I think (those more experienced will be able to provide better info) even with a pre-pay it is best to take a 'final I'm moving out now' reading of each set of figures on the meter. Ideally a pic if possible of each one too.

You did tell SP (if that's your 'old house provider') the day you moved out yes ?

I think the 'issue' here is by the sounds of it they did not get a reading. If its a key meter as I 'understand it' they only get readings 'sent' when you take the key to the shop and top it up.

Your posty makes no sense. All meters have a reading and you should have provided a final one. There also can be descrepancies with prepay if the tarrifs have not been updated and there is a balance owing.

Maybe you owe nothing but without a final rading it is going to be hard to proove.
  • As far as I'm aware there was no reading as such? Just the machine where I put the stick in to top up. There was a screen there with my balance. There was no other information available

On prepay electric meter the total kwhs reading is on screen " G " ( 5 presses of the blue button) screen " H" will show the total kwhrs you have used since you first took over the account. The supplier can use either G or H to establish a final reading. BG like G but Eon and others seem to want the "H " reading. Supplier will only get meter info from the tenant when the card is presented at a paypoint , and that will most likely not happen if someone vacates. Always best to phone in the outgoing readings for both gas and electric prepay meters
There could be standing charges owed ( seen as a negative or the word "owed "on the first screen ) or debt repayment total on screen "S " This screen could hold some real corkers of amounts of repayment owed. My record I have seen on a gas prepayment meter is £9000 owed in debt ! and £2000 owed.
is not at all uncommon on both gas or electric prepayment meters
Some landlords owe the standing charges because they do not pay the weekly standing charges on meters in between tenants and hope that the new tenant will pay it
