Bought a chair from Argos online last December which has ripped away on both sides from the seams in the same place. Assessor came his report states its not a manufacturing fault it is due to pressure on the arms.

So are we not supposed to sit on the chair?

Argos refuse to do anything about it unless I pay for an independent report, which would cost in excess fo £120.

Not sure where to go from here.

As Argos are correct you either pay for the report or don't. After 6 months the onus is on you to show it is a manufacturing fault.

If the fault is found to be inherent then Argos will not only have to supply you with a remedy but also reimburse you for the cost of the report.

Have people been sitting on the arms?

An independent report from a company such as FIRA or Homeserve Furniture Repairs shouldn't cost you more than £110 tops, including VAT. You will be able to reclaim the cost of the report from Argos if the report states that it is not the result of misuse. Do make sure that you're using a completely different company to the one that Argos used, to ensure it is a truly independent report.
Before you do go ahead with a report however, I would check how the chair is being used. Is anybody sitting on the arms, or is somebody using the arms to lever themselves out of the chair when they get up? Most chairs aren't designed with that in mind.
Well informed on the subjects of sofas and wood furniture, and well opinionated on everything else :rotfl:
