Tyre blew out on my car when away with work
I went to a conference last night 200 miles away for work, on the way home my tyre blew out, late at night and during some lovely heavy rain, in the middle of nowhere. I had to drive on a few miles to get to an area with light to change it. Tyre totally ruined and not fixable.
I get fuel and food expenses for work.... should I claim for the tyre?
Awkward!

No. It'll make you look lie and idiot if you try to claim for the cost of the tyre.0

Im fairly sure any fuel payment will include a contribution to wear and tear.
I wouldnt say you have a claim. Theres a lot of factors that can cause a blow out, i really doubt it was your works fault.0 -
Perhaps, although it was whilst on service with work... it shouldn't cost me money to go on a work trip ultimately ?
I will probably say nothing, although it is rather annoying..0 -

Are you saying if you weren't away with work the tyre wouldn't have burst? So much weird logic in that I don't know where to start!0 -

You getting too and from work has nothing to do with work. You couldve walked or got pbulic transport and avoided any chance of paying for a blow out.
Blow outs can happen at any time. Who would you be looking to pay for it had it happened when you where visiting a supermarket?
I said your fuel payment probably includes cover for wear and tear of your vehicle (ie when you claim your fuel expenses which lets be honest are far excessive of the actual cost, yes?? you should put some of it aside to cover things like reduced lifespan of breaks and tyres)
Youll probably find your employer has already paid for it. So claiming again could make you look silly. You never knwo they might pay for it, some companies are nice like that.0 -
The company might consider that the tyre blew due to a lack of maintenance and start to quiz / request further information on servicing etc. Some companies have requirements around this for vehicles on company business.
Yes you would look like an idiot and all companies would knock such a claim back.
If you had an accident due to being tired would you expect them to pay ?0 -
As spadoosh stated, it's probably a mileage allowance rather than a straight fuel payment.
If this is the case, the money paid is to cover fuel and general wear and tear of the vehicle.
If you had roadside breakdown cover. that would probably have meant someone would have come out to change the wheel or if you had a torch and waited for the rain to subside rather than driving a few miles on a flat, you may not have needed a new tyre so ultimately, it was your decisions that cost you money.0 -
If you are allowed to use a PC belonging to your employer to browse the news at lunchtime and during your lunch break the PC fails and needs replacing, would you expect your employer to charge the cost of a new PC to you?0

Not really relevant, as the PC would already be the company's asset, the car in this instance is mine, and was being used for professional purposes..It was a relatively new tyre also, fitted only 6 months ago
The overwhelming response is don't claim, in that case.... I wont bother..0
