I would like to subscribe to newsgroups but don't wish to use my isp as when I did previously, it attracted spam.
I am not necessarly looking for a free news provider and I only read 3 newsgroups and don't download pictures.
Can a techie expert please advise me.
Thanks
Margaret

I'm not a techie but you can have a free email address at many places. I have Hotmail and Lycos email addresses.
www.hotmail.co.uk and
www.lycos.co.uk
There is also Google which has larger storage space, I believe.
Good luck0 -
and you can always disguise your return email address - as a 'noreply' or complete gobbledygook0

Thanks to both but my isp shows my username at the top. I can put in a noreply@dot.com for return email but spammers can see my isp username at the top of the message.
I do have a yahoo address but I can't download newsgroups from there.
Thanks a lot for your replies.

Hmm, odd. What email client are you using? Do the newsgroups have web access as well?0

I have outlook express and my isp is e7even. I contacted them today to ask if they needed to put my username at the top and the reply was yes!
I therefore need to download the newsgroups from another provider.

well, it might be too drastic for you, but I would recommend switching your email client to Mozilla Thunderbird. This can pick up newsgroup accounts without being hijacked by your ISP (I recall freeserve doing this to me ages ago, I think) and you can call yourself what you like and with any old email address as a reply, I think. It's pretty easy to move your old stuff into this.0

I use News.Individual.net
they will accept me@privacy.net for an email addy
You have to pay a small amount to subscribe now, but it's worth it I think, I also use my isp Virgin.net and the same email addy as above, so if one goes down, I have the other one.
I just chose a nickname and didn't have to use my username to post, I believe you have to give it to them when you subscribe so that you can set up the newsgroup.
I have a few different email addresses with mail2world.com
you can choose your own domain e.g me@mail2schooll, they have hunderds to choose from, that way you don't have to give out your main email address if you are subscribing to or booking anything online.0 -
Hi Margaret - you can configure outlook express to use a free news server if you like - you can find some at http://www.newsservers.net/FreeNewsServers.php or you can search on google for 'free news server'
You can configure outlook for different users by selecting Tools --- Accounts - News.
You will probably find it better to use a dedicated news reader such as free agent (search for it at https://www.download.com). I just set this up for news.e7even.com and it did not require any email address or username password and it works fine.
Good Luck

what a difference a few days make!, just prior to me taking a wedding anniversary holiday on the south coast, there was Maragaret tearing her hair out over the "non-disc" affair, and I return to find she's now into news groups and running full steam.
As much as I would like to sit here all day, I'm being taken out to a family lunch for my 65th (but don't tell anyone). But I've no doubt I will be thinking about an email from e7even as they've offered to increase from 1mbps to 2mbps for a £45 one-off payment. What should I do ? I ask myself. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
